For this 4000 square-foot house, Don used ICF (insulated concrete form) construction.  The insulated foam block provides a 12-inch thick concrete-filled wall with an insulation R-value of 50 as opposed to a regular 2x6 wall's R-19 and a 2x4 wall's R-11.   ICF is not only extremely thermally efficient, it lends itself well to Southwest adobe-style designs.
